Yes, there is grinding in Heroes of Hammerwatch, but it's grinding that doesn't feel too daunting. If I didn't find enough ore for a particular goal, I could always use the gold I found to buy some. So, if you have 0 gold in town, tax is 0%. If you have 5000 gold in town, the tax might be like 40%, more or less depending on your town upgrades. This is just my impression. Keep your money only if you want the church upgrades. I believe it is based on how much money your town currently has.

The point is to try to farm as little as possible in the early game. It might seem tempting, to try to get ahead of the curve by grinding ore in the early game and saving up a little extra to get one more bonus to ease the difficulty, but simply making it one dungeon higher the hard way sees such massive increases in gold and ore loot that grinding early levels is extremely inefficient.

I know enemy patterns, experience rewards, gold/ore drops, that's all the same in new game plus. Since you can get pretty close to finishing upgrades in a regular new game, though, what other ways are there to power up your character? Do levels past 20 give aynthing special past some skill points, or do the difficuluty levels of the NG+ modes not increase very quickly?

It's very easy to grind game with ranger since long time with blood rites, good statues, drinks and attune mobs and bosses with book and monster. What to you mean, the town progress is the same for all the party members. The host upgrades his town, which is used for the party, but the guests also get the same amount as the host and can immediatly use the ore in their singeplayer runs. You don't really have to grind, you just have to know how to spend your resources. If able, join some multiplayer lobbies and utilize their town areas, while saving your gold/ore. Always get shaftlocke pickaxe and alway use the alters that require you to sacrifice a stat (if able) for the chance to get 100% ore pickup.
